In Slovenia, we are faced with the waste of around 70 kg of food per person every year, of which a third is still edible. By using electric composters like the ROBOX, a domestic household can reduce the amount of food waste thrown away by up to 90%. You can be one step closer to becoming a greener, more sustainable household by saving on waste disposal, where additional CO2 emissions are generated, and using compost for fertilization, where we save on the purchase of fertilizers.
According to data from the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia (SURS), the amount of food waste in Slovenia has been increasing since 2013, only in 2017 and 2021 was there a decrease compared to the previous year. In all observed years, the largest amount of food waste was generated in households, followed by catering and food service. There is also data for the European Union, which throws away as much as 20 percent of all food.
Food waste is the third largest source of greenhouse gases, as highlighted by numerous studies that show that around a third of global emissions come from the food sector. In particular, land use contributes to half of these emissions in the form of carbon dioxide, reminding us of the need to reduce food waste.
Where does wasted food go?
About 40 percent is recycled anaerobically in biogas plants, about 30 percent aerobically in compost plants, and 20 percent is biologically stabilized before disposal in mechanical-biological treatment plants. The rest is processed using alternative methods such as incineration, oil re-refining, and other biological processing processes.
Reducing the amount of food waste is a collective duty that requires the cooperation of all social sectors – from government policies and private companies to civil society academia and individuals. Locally produced food is not only a basic necessity of life but also represents a special privilege in today’s world. Therefore, it is our responsibility to treat it thoughtfully and with due respect, and most importantly – to throw it away as little as possible.
But what can we as individuals do with discarded food waste?
The answer is composting! Composting in the domestic household brings direct benefits: less waste for disposal, lower CO2 emissions, and reduction of external costs such as noise and visual disturbances. The compost created can be used to enrich the soil of potted plants or in the garden, replacing the use of expensive fertilizers and contributing to a healthier environment.
One such composter is the ROBOX electric composter – an innovative solution for the ecological treatment of kitchen waste. It effectively removes unpleasant odors with UV sterilization, and its intelligent LED screen allows control over the composting process, which reduces the volume of food waste by up to 90%. With a capacity of 3.3 l, easy maintenance, and a safety lock, it is ideal for any household space and is also a great step towards a more sustainable lifestyle.
